Prepartum physical therapy during pregnancy

Common symptoms we help with

You do not have to wait until pain becomes severe to seek support during pregnancy. Physical therapy may help with:

  • Low-back pain or sciatica
  • Pelvic girdle or sacroiliac joint pain
  • Pubic bone or inner-thigh pain
  • Hip, groin, or tailbone discomfort
  • Rib, neck, or upper-back tension
  • Wrist or thumb pain from changing movement demands
  • Bladder leakage or urinary urgency
  • Pelvic pressure or heaviness
  • Pelvic floor tightness or difficulty relaxing
  • Core weakness or abdominal separation concerns
  • Discomfort with walking, sleeping, lifting, or exercise
  • Uncertainty about how to safely modify workouts during pregnancy
  • Questions about breathing, pushing, and physical preparation for birth

How we can help

Movement system evaluation

We assess how pregnancy-related changes are affecting your walking, lifting, squatting, breathing, and daily movement. Your plan is based on what feels difficult now and what you want to continue doing throughout pregnancy.

Postural assessment

As your center of gravity changes, your body may compensate through the spine, ribs, hips, or pelvis. We help you find positions and movement strategies that reduce strain without asking you to hold one “perfect” posture.

Strength & functional testing

We evaluate strength, mobility, balance, and control in ways that are appropriate for your stage of pregnancy. This helps us choose exercises that feel safe, useful, and specific to your daily needs.

Pelvic floor evaluation

With your consent, an external or internal pelvic floor assessment can evaluate strength, coordination, tension, and the ability to contract and relax. The findings may guide treatment for leakage, pressure, pain, or preparation for birth.

Manual therapy

Gentle hands-on care may help reduce pain, improve mobility, and relieve areas of muscular tension. Treatment is adjusted for your comfort, trimester, and medical history.

Trigger point release

Targeted release can address overworked muscles around the back, hips, pelvis, ribs, and shoulders. This may make walking, sleeping, and everyday movement feel more comfortable.

Shockwave therapy

For select, non-pregnancy-related tendon or soft tissue conditions, shockwave therapy may be appropriate to help reduce pain and support healing. It is used only after a thorough evaluation confirms it is safe for you and your pregnancy.

Therapeutic taping (Kinesio tape & Leukotape)

Taping may provide temporary support for the abdomen, pelvis, back, or irritated joints. It can also improve comfort and body awareness during movement.

Therapeutic exercise

Your program may include core and pelvic floor coordination, hip strength, mobility, balance, and pregnancy-safe conditioning. Exercises are selected to support your current symptoms, birth preparation, and postpartum goals.

Neuromuscular re-education

We help you coordinate breathing, pressure management, core activation, and pelvic floor response during movement. These skills can support lifting, exercise, labor positions, and early postpartum recovery.

Patient education

You will receive practical guidance for sleeping, sitting, lifting, working, exercising, and caring for your changing body. We can also discuss activity modification and movement strategies for birth preparation.

Home exercise program

Your home plan is designed to fit into pregnancy, not add unnecessary stress to it. Exercises are updated as your body and goals change from trimester to trimester.
