Hypermobility

Hypermobility can make movement feel tiring, unstable, or unpredictable. Bloom helps you build strength and control so you can stay active with more confidence.

Physical therapy for hypermobility

Common symptoms we help with

Hypermobility can affect people differently, and symptoms may change with activity, stress, fatigue, or recovery. Physical therapy may help with:

  • Frequent joint pain or aching after activity
  • A feeling that joints are loose, unstable, or difficult to control
  • Recurrent sprains, strains, or partial dislocations
  • Clicking, popping, or shifting sensations
  • Muscle tightness caused by muscles working overtime to stabilize joints
  • Neck, back, shoulder, hip, knee, or ankle pain
  • Poor balance or reduced body awareness
  • Fatigue with standing, walking, exercise, or repetitive tasks
  • Flare-ups after doing too much too quickly
  • Difficulty finding exercise that feels challenging but sustainable
  • Fear of movement after repeated injuries
  • Symptoms related to hypermobility spectrum disorder or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

How we can help

Movement system evaluation

We look at how your joints, muscles, and movement strategies work together during daily tasks and exercise. The goal is to identify where you need more support, control, or load tolerance rather than simply limiting movement.

Postural assessment

We assess how you hold and support your body during sitting, standing, work, and exercise. Instead of chasing a rigid “perfect” posture, we help you find positions that are efficient, comfortable, and sustainable.

Strength & functional testing

Testing focuses on joint control, endurance, balance, strength, and the tasks that trigger symptoms. This helps us build a program that is appropriately challenging without repeatedly pushing into flare-ups.

Manual therapy

Gentle, targeted hands-on care may reduce pain and address areas that have become stiff or overworked. We avoid unnecessary aggressive stretching or treatment that increases joint instability.

Trigger point release

Muscles around hypermobile joints often work harder to create stability and may develop painful knots or guarding. Targeted release can reduce tension while strengthening helps address why those muscles are overworking.

Shockwave therapy

For select tendon or soft tissue pain that develops from joints working overtime to stay stable, shockwave therapy may help reduce pain and support healing. It is used only after an evaluation confirms it is appropriate alongside your stability program.

Therapeutic taping (Kinesio tape & Leukotape)

Taping can improve joint awareness and provide temporary support during daily activity or exercise. It is used as a teaching tool while you build your own muscular control.

Therapeutic exercise

Your program emphasizes strength, endurance, stability, and gradual load progression. Exercises are selected to help you move confidently within a range you can control.

Neuromuscular re-education

We retrain proprioception, balance, joint positioning, and coordinated movement. This can help you respond more effectively when a joint feels unstable or an activity becomes unpredictable.

Patient education

You will learn practical strategies for pacing, flare-up management, recovery, and exercise progression. We also help you recognize when to modify an activity without abandoning movement altogether.

Home exercise program

Your home plan is designed to be consistent and sustainable. It will focus on a manageable number of exercises that build stability over time without overwhelming your joints or nervous system.
